Thanks to David Tatum, Founder of Freedom Flight USA, I was able to experience a piece of history down in Dallas, Texas this weekend. Flying a 1943 Boeing N2S3 Stearman around was an awesome experience, getting back to that grass-roots, no GPS flying that I love.

David is one of the Chief Pilots for American Airlines in Dallas and loves spending time in his Stearman after flying across the country on some of the most modern airliners in the world. At one point, he was flying Boeing 767s and would come back home to fly the Boeing Stearman – What a cool way to see how things progressed over just half a century!

    There’s nothing like some stick-and-rudder history, is there? You really feel connected to the past in a plane like that. I had a chance to fly a 1929 Bellanca CH300, Hawaiian Airline’s first plane, and it was magic. With the exception of takeoff and landing I was able to do all the flying and it was easy to go back in time in my mind.

    I own a 1941 PT-17 Stearman based in Bowling Green, Kentucky if you are ever around and wanna go for a flight. I am 18 years old right now.
